Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsFamilies and individuals who search for treatment are often in the hardest week of their lives. They are not browsing. They are scared, tired and trying to find a place that is real, licensed and able to answer a phone tonight. Any advertising that reaches them carries a responsibility that ordinary local services do not, and that is why PPC for addiction treatment centers is built differently from nearly any other trade we cover.
Google also treats this category as sensitive. As we understand it, advertisers offering addiction treatment have been required to be certified through a third party before ads run, and the rules are updated from time to time, so read the current Google Ads healthcare and medicines policy and the certification requirements directly, not from a summary. This page is about the part you control after that: the landing page a caller sees, what happens when the phone rings, and how you measure admissions without exposing anyone's private information.
Before any campaign
Start with paperwork, not keywords. A center should be able to answer four questions before asking anyone to build an account. Is the facility licensed in its state for the level of care it advertises? Does it hold the accreditation it intends to mention? Has it completed whatever certification Google requires for addiction treatment advertisers at the moment? And does its website tell the truth about who runs it, where it is and what it can treat? If the answer to any of these is no or not yet, the first project is fixing that, not buying clicks.
We are an advertising team, not a regulator or a law firm, and nothing here is legal or clinical advice. Federal and state laws govern how treatment is marketed and whether anyone may be paid for referring a patient, and those rules differ by state. Have your counsel or compliance officer review ad text and landing pages, and never pay anyone per admission. We do not buy or sell patient referrals and we do not resell calls.
Next, decide what the ads promise. Respectful, accurate language wins here: levels of care you actually provide, whether you accept insurance and which kinds in general terms, how quickly an assessment can happen, and who answers the phone. Avoid outcome language of any kind. Do not claim cure rates, do not describe a stay as a transformation and do not use imagery that exploits a person at their lowest point. Google's policies, state rules and common decency point the same way.
Finally, decide how the campaign will end. The goal is a conversation with an admissions coordinator who can assess fit, verify benefits and arrange next steps. A click is not the goal and a form submission is only the start. Everything below is built to protect that conversation.
A word on what to bid on. People search for treatment in many ways: "drug rehab near me," "alcohol detox," "outpatient rehab that takes my insurance," "dual diagnosis program," "medication-assisted treatment" and the name of a specific program or city. Some of these describe a person ready to call, others a relative gathering options. Group them by level of care and by region, write plain, accurate ad text for each, and keep the terms that suggest a different need, such as free meeting listings, support group schedules or jobs in the field, out of the account. Paid ads in this field are narrow by design, because every wrong-fit click is also a wrong-fit conversation for a staff member who may be answering a very serious call.
Budget follows capacity, not ambition. A center with eight open beds and an admissions team that can return every call within minutes can responsibly spend more than one with a waiting list. Set the monthly ad spend by asking how many assessments your staff can truly hold well, and how many of those typically become admissions, using your own history. If you do not have that history yet, start small and learn.
What to track and why
| What to track | Why it matters | How to do it carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Calls from ads, by length | Most people in this category phone. A call under a minute is usually a wrong number or a hang up; a call of several minutes is a real conversation. | Call tracking numbers that swap on the landing page; set a minimum call length for a conversion; check with your counsel before recording any calls and follow your state consent rules |
| Insurance verification requests | A verification form tells you the visitor was serious enough to share a plan name. | Collect only what you need; use a secure form; never pass names, plan numbers or health details into ad or analytics tools |
| Qualified admissions calls | The number that matters is how many calls became an assessment, not how many rang. | Admissions staff mark each call with a simple outcome code; upload only anonymous outcome counts to the ad account if at all |
| Assessments scheduled and completed | Shows whether the path from interest to a real assessment works. | Track as an offline conversion in aggregate form, never tied to an identifiable person in Google |
| Search terms that produced calls | Tells you which phrases deserve more attention and which are noise. | Review the search terms report weekly with your admissions lead |
| Time of day and day of week | Crisis calls do not follow office hours. | Compare call volume with staffing; if no one answers at night, use an answering service trained for this work |
| Landing page behavior | Shows whether visitors find the phone number and the verification form. | Heat maps and session recordings only after reviewing privacy and policy implications for health related pages |
Landing page and call handling
Calls
The number sits at the top of the page and stays visible on a phone screen. If admissions is not staffed overnight, the number routes to a trained service, not voicemail.
Trust
Facility name, address, licensing and accreditation details, and the name or role of the clinical lead. Visitors and Google reviewers both look for honesty here.
Clarity
Detox, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient described in everyday words, with a note on what you provide and what you refer out.
Action
Short, secure and clear about what happens to the information. Ask for the minimum, state a response time you can keep and then keep it.
Reassurance
A short explanation of the assessment conversation so callers know it is a conversation, not a sales pitch, and that they can stop at any time.
Support
A section for a parent or spouse who is searching on behalf of someone else, covering how to start the conversation and what an assessment involves.
Safety
Visitors in immediate danger should be pointed to emergency services or the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the United States. This is the right thing to do and it builds trust.
Fit
Say what you do not treat, such as conditions outside your clinical scope. Fewer wrong-fit calls is better for everyone.
How we build it
We review your licensing, accreditation and certification status against the current Google policy before any account is created, and we pause if something is missing.
Your clinical and admissions leaders approve every claim, and counsel reviews anything regulated.
Searches like "alcohol rehab near me" and "outpatient program" have different needs, so each gets its own message and its own page.
Call length, form submissions and anonymous outcome counts, with no health details in any pay per click platform.
We help you script the first thirty seconds of an admissions call and set up after-hours coverage.
We read call outcomes and search terms together and adjust, always keeping tone respectful.
Management
Questions treatment providers ask
It is pay per click advertising, mainly through Google Ads, for centers that offer detox, residential or outpatient care. It starts with eligibility and policy, continues with careful landing pages and admissions call handling, and ends with tracking that protects patient privacy.
Our fee is $895 a month for one platform, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three, with ad spend paid separately to the platform. There is no setup fee and no contract. Your spend ceiling depends on how many admissions you can responsibly handle.
As we understand it, Google has required third party certification for these advertisers, and rules change. Read the current Google Ads healthcare and medicines policy and the certifying body's criteria directly before spending anything, and confirm with your compliance team.
Be very cautious. Stories can imply results, can reveal identities and may conflict with advertising policy and state rules. Check current policy and have counsel review anything before use.
Track call length, form submissions and anonymous outcome counts, and keep names, plan numbers and health details out of ad and analytics tools. Whether HIPAA applies to a given tool is a question for your counsel.
Do not. Laws on patient referrals and payment for admissions are strict and vary by state. We charge a flat monthly fee and do not buy, sell or broker referrals.
Many are researching for a family member, are not yet ready or need a different level of care. A good admissions conversation treats each kindly and leaves the door open.
It is generally not offered for this category, though Google changes its categories over time. Standard search campaigns are the main tool, so check Google for current availability.
Once certification and approvals are complete, a first Google Ads campaign can run within days, but expect weeks of careful tuning. We do not promise admissions or timelines.
